Course Description:________________________________________________ Welcome to the BRHS Library Media Center! We are glad that you have decided to take library service class and want to let you know what is expected from the start. Library Service is a regular academic course, with an A - F grading scale; you are expected to learn both library skills and career skills from your experiences during your time with us. This also means that you will have some academic work to complete as well as your daily library service duties.
We expect you to learn to do a variety of tasks. Many are simple things that take only your time – for example cleaning, dusting, and straitening bookshelves and displays. These may seem tedious, but are absolutely necessary to maintaining a clean and useful library and are often the jobs our staff has no time to accomplish. Other tasks you might be asked to learn and perform include circulation of books, processing new items, organizing record-keeping sheets, creating displays, reshelving books, checking inventory lists, etc. The ability to put items in order by alphabet and decimal number is required for many of these jobs. Whatever we ask you to do must be completed carefully and correctly, otherwise it will have to be redone by you or someone else. Poor job performance will be reflected in the grade you earn throughout the semester. If you perform well at your job then your grade will likewise reflect your positive effort and attitude!
The academic work required for this course is as follows:
Assignments ___________________________
1. Daily Work & Patron Service (1 each quarter grading period) 2. Library Activity Sheets (1 packet each quarter) 3. Graphic Book Review (1 each semester) 4. Shelf Grade (at least 1 each quarter) 5. Attendance (-2 points for each absence and/or tardy from 50 starting points)
Grading Scale______________________________________________________ 90 - 100% = A range 80 - 89% = B range 70 - 79% = C range 60 - 69% = D range Below 60% = Failing
Expectations:______________________________________________________ Consider this position as on-the-job type training. It is very important that we maintain a businesslike manner and provide good customer service. You will learn skills as a library TA that you can list as experience on a resume. I will be happy to be a reference for students who are successful in this course too. Here are some expectations:
& Arrive on time. Detention will be assigned if this becomes a problem; it shouldn't. & Be in class. If you are absent from work you don’t get paid. Since your pay is a grade in this class, you should expect it would go down if you have frequent absences. We need you here!!! & Dress appropriately. Just follow the dress code of BRHS, but remember no hats please. & Do not socialize with other students utilizing the facilities. They are here to accomplish work and so are you, so wait until the passing period to chat. & When you finish a job, ask what else you can do. If you don’t finish, tell us where you have left off. & Provide good customer service. Ask how you can help and do your best. & Ask for help whenever you have a question; we are glad to provide guidance & save you time! & Be a motivated self-starter. Even if we are too busy to speak with you when you come in each day, you should know what you can do to help out, so just jump right in and do what you can.
You are personally responsible for keeping your activity worksheets until you turn them in. It is possible to earn extra credit if you turn them in early. You may work on your library activity sheets and book review whenever all assigned tasks are satisfactorily completed – check with Mrs. Linden or Mrs. Helsby before beginning library activity sheets.
